Someone leans on a club balcony. The camera drops to the packed dance floor. A spotlight finds one person in the crowd, they look up, and the music hits. That’s the La Tormenta de Arena trend, and right now everyone from Batman to your neighbor’s cat is in it.
What is the La Tormenta de Arena trend?
It’s an AI video format. You take two pictures, one for the person on the balcony and one for the person on the dance floor, and an AI video tool turns them into a short, dramatic club scene. The sound is “La tormenta de arena” by the Spanish band Dorian, which is why the trend got its name. You’ll also see it called the club balcony trend, the spotlight trend or 3MSC.
The joke is always the same: put two people (or characters) together who should absolutely not be having a romantic movie moment. Then let the spotlight do the rest.
Where does it come from?
The scene is a remake of the club moment from the Spanish movie Tres metros sobre el cielo (2010), known in English as Three Steps Above Heaven. It stars Mario Casas as H, a rebel who races motorbikes, and María Valverde as Babi, a girl from a strict, wealthy family. The film is based on a 1992 novel by the Italian writer Federico Moccia and became a huge hit in Spain.
Here’s the original scene, posted by the Spanish film magazine Fotogramas:
And yes, that’s the same song. It plays in the movie scene, which is exactly why the trend uses it. The song is older than the movie, though: Dorian released “La tormenta de arena” (“The Sandstorm”) in 2009 on their album La ciudad subterránea. Despite the title, it has nothing to do with sand. It’s about losing someone in a crowd and a love that can’t work but can’t end either. So yes, the song choice is perfect.
Who made the first AI version is unclear. The AI format took off in late September 2026.
The best La Tormenta de Arena versions
Batman and Joker. Gotham’s longest toxic relationship finally gets its movie moment.
Draco and Hermione. Harry Potter fans have shipped these two for years. The AI just made it official.
Khabib and Conor. The caption is Russian for “8 years later,” a nod to their famous UFC 229 fight in 2018. Nobody saw this rematch coming. Obviously AI.
Putin, Trump and Zelensky. World politics, but make it a nightclub. This one is pure AI satire, and the faces say it all. None of this happened, and if you see a version that looks real, it still didn’t.
The cat version. Honestly the most romantic one on this list.
Fun fact: three of our five favorite versions come from Russian-speaking AI creators. Like a lot of AI trends, this one went global fast.
Why it works
Three reasons. First, the setup is pure cinema: the balcony, the spotlight, the slow look up. Your brain knows this shot from a hundred movies. Second, the song sounds like heartbreak even if you don’t speak Spanish. And third, the format needs zero explanation. Two faces, one spotlight, and the contrast is the punchline.
It’s the same energy as the hit the road dude AI remakes: one iconic scene, endless casting options. And like the Rumpelstiltskin meme, it proves AI memes work best when they’re obviously AI.
How to make your own
1. Pick two pictures. Your pet and your other pet. Two characters you drew. You and your best friend, if they’re in on the joke. 2. Use an AI video app with an image to video or “two photo” template. Search for the trend name inside the app. Most of these apps cost credits and have age limits, so check before you upload anything. 3. Add the sound. On TikTok or Instagram, tap the sound on any version and use it for yours. 4. Label it as AI when you post. Both TikTok and Instagram have a setting for that.
One big rule: don’t put real people into this without asking them first. That includes your crush. A romantic AI video of someone who never agreed to it isn’t cute, it’s creepy, and it can get you in real trouble. Keep it to pets, characters and friends who said yes.
